Guide for Teachers
Do you teach students to read music on the treble clef, bass clef or both?
Use the musical pairs method to take students from having no reading knowledge to reading and playing the notes on their instrument.
Pre- Level 1
Play games with line or space notes only.
Level 1
Play games with level 1 cards (blue cards).
Level 2
Add level 2 cards for notes outside of the staff (blue cards + red cards).
Learn to play the notes on your instrument
Play a game of ZEBRA (one of the bonus games) to learn to read the notes on your instrument. Start with a small deck and gradually add cards to expand your note knowledge.

How to use musical pairs at home
- Use the levels system described above in the ‘For Teachers’ section.
- Use as a reward at the end of a productive practice session
- Use as motivation at the beginning of a practice session
You don’t need to know how to read music to play with your child
Musical Pairs includes an answer card that shows the names of the notes. Have this card visible while playing and you can learn too!
